Incense Sticks & Cones

Incense has been a part of human culture for millennia, used in rituals, meditation, and for its therapeutic properties.

Each fragrance has its own story to tell. But first let’s briefly consider the main types of incense and their ingredients.

Incense Types and Ingredients

Incense comes in various forms, with sticks and cones being the most popular. We offer both sticks and cones in this section.

There's no single "better" option between incense sticks and cones - Sticks are slow-burning and fill your room with a gentle aroma.  Cones on the other hand provide a more intense scent but have a shorter burn time.

One way to categorise incense, apart from whether it comes in stick or cone form, is by considering its ingredients. Understanding these is key to selecting the perfect incense for your desired mood and setting.

Masala Incense

Masala incense is most commonly available in sticks and is crafted from a blend of natural ingredients, including herbs, resins, and essential oils, rolled onto a bamboo stick.

Marsala incense is a traditional type and results in a rich, deep scent that elevates your surroundings and enhances wellbeing.

Charcoal-Based Incense

Charcoal-based incense again is most commonly available as sticks and features a core of charcoal coated in fragrance oils. This allows for a wide range of scents, from floral to musky, making it versatile for any occasion.

The charcoal efficiently disperses the fragrance, enveloping your space in your chosen aroma swiftly and effectively.

Resin Incense

Resin incense is typically available in a raw form, not pre-formed into sticks or cones, and is derived from the sap or resin of certain trees and plants, such as frankincense, myrrh, and copal. These aromatic substances are valued for their rich fragrance and therapeutic properties.

Resin incense is typically burned on charcoal disks or hot coals to release its fragrant smoke.

Incense Sticks vs Incense Cones

We’ll focus on incense sticks for the rest of this Introduction, simply because these are the most common way incense is burned.

But bear in mind that while sticks offer certain benefits like a longer burn time and consistent fragrance release, incense cones reign supreme when it comes to creating a powerful and immediate aromatic impact.

The biggest advantage of cones over sticks is the intensity and speed with which they release fragrance. And of course the mesmerizing backflow effect employed by certain incense burners, where smoke cascades downwards instead of rising, is unique to cones (backflow cones).

How to Properly Light and Use Incense Sticks for Maximum
Benefit

To light an incense stick correctly, hold the tip of the stick directly in a flame until it ignites. Blow out the flame gently, allowing the incense to smoulder and release its fragrance. Place the smouldering stick in an incense burner to catch the ash.

For the best experience, ensure the room is well-ventilated. This helps distribute the scent evenly and prevent the smoke from becoming overwhelming. Remember, never leave burning incense unattended and keep it away from flammable materials.
